Before we get there

If you smell gas
Get everyone out first. Do not touch a light switch, a plug, or your phone while you are inside — a spark is a spark. Once you are outside and clear, call the gas company, then call us.
Water going where it should not
Shut the main off. In most houses around here it is where the line comes in — a basement wall, a crawlspace, or a box near the meter out front. Turn it clockwise until it stops, then open a low tap to drain what is left in the pipes.
Sparking, burning smell, or water near the panel
Kill the breaker for that circuit, or the main if you are not sure which one it is. Do not stand in water to reach a panel. If it is already wet, leave it and tell us on the phone.
No heat
Check the thermostat is calling for heat, then check the switch on the furnace itself — it looks like a light switch and it gets knocked off more often than you would think. If the house is dropping below freezing, open the cabinets under sinks on outside walls.
None of this is a repair — it is buying time and keeping the damage small until somebody with the right parts is standing in front of it.
